Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

When I was younger, I was always interested in woodworking and how furniture is made. So when I came in on Martin Luther King Jr.’s day, I was expecting to be at a desk working on something. However, I was surprised with Yvonne, her mother, her husband, and Rebecca. I was told I didn’t have to be in that day but I stayed, and her husband taught me how to use a plate joiner machine. This machine pierces through a wooden plank to create a small gap for the biscuits to fit in. I made sure the machine was aligned with the exact place I wanted the cut to be. Next, I held the machine up and sturdy so it didn’t move. Lastly, I let the machine start up before inserting it into the wood, until it couldn’t go any further. Once the wooden planks had the holes, we placed the biscuits in and glued all the planks together, making it into what will soon be the top of a table. Learning this was really fun to do and I got to learn new skills I can later use if I ever want to make my own table. I have always appreciated how people are able to craft things with wood. Now that I’ve participated in this, it’s made me feel proud of myself and I look forward to being able to do more things like this.
